Toenail Fungus (Onychomycosis):
Nail Fungus is a fungal infection of the nail and nail bed. It can cause the nail to become discolored, thick, and more likely to crack and break. About 50% of all nail disorders occur because of fungal infections. The infection can be very stubborn and resistant to conventional topical and systemic
treatments.

How Do we get Toenail Fungus?
Fungus is found ubiquitous throughout our environment. Onychomycosis is caused by a combination of genetic susceptibility, and microtrauma to the nail region. In this type of infection, fungal organisms invade, and penetrate beneath the nail, usually starting at the tip of the nail invading toward the opposite end of the nail. Fungal infections may easily be spread to other family members, by the shedding of fungal elements throughout the household. Areas of increasing moisture such as, sweaty feet, heavy construction footwear, public showers, and locker rooms may harbor fungal organisms leading to the spread fungal infection.

Dangers of Nail Fungus:
Besides being cosmetically unsightly, fungal toenails can also result in more serious conditions such as secondary bacterial skin infections, leading to more serious systemic infections if left untreated. It can also cause embarrassing foot odor resulting from fungal debris residing beneath the nail. If left untreated the infection may ultimately destroy and disfigure the entire nail plate and spread to other adjacent nails.
